Some repairs can make financial sense. A modest repair on an otherwise desirable RV may improve the options available through a private sale, trade-in or consignment.
The decision becomes more complicated when several projects need attention at once, such as:

- roof work
- water damage

- slide repairs
- appliances

- plumbing

What Actually Helps Determine an RV Offer?
A useful evaluation begins with accurate information about the RV as it sits today. There is no published SamyRV formula in which one age, mileage figure or condition issue guarantees a particular offer.
Identify the RV

- year
- manufacturer
- model
- RV type
- approximate length
- VIN when available
- mileage for a motorhome where applicable
Describe the Current Condition
Mention known:
- water intrusion
- roof damage
- structural problems
- mechanical issues
- engine or transmission problems
- electrical issues
- plumbing problems
- slide problems
- generator condition
- appliance condition
- interior deterioration
- tire or wheel problems

If something has not been tested recently, describe it as untested rather than guessing.
For a Motorhome, Separate Starting From Moving

For a Travel Trailer or Fifth Wheel, Describe the Running Gear
A towable RV does not run under its own power, so motorhome engine terminology is not useful.
Report:
- hitch or pin-box condition
- tongue jack or landing gear
- tires and wheels
- axles
- bearings where known
- trailer brakes
- visible frame damage
- whether slide-outs retract
- whether transport equipment can reach the towing end
The practical question is whether the unit can be connected and moved safely.
Describe the Ownership Situation
Tell the buyer:
- which state issued the ownership document
- whether a Maine title is required for the specific RV
- whether the title is available
- whether a lien is recorded
- whether the title may be electronic because of a participating lienholder
- whether multiple owners are named
- whether the RV came through an estate
- whether the seller’s name matches the ownership record

Maine’s RV Title Rule Depends on Model Year, Vehicle Type and Trailer Weight
Maine does not use one simple title rule for every RV.
The Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles currently requires titles for vehicles whose model year is within the last 25 years. As of January 1, 2026, that means model year 2001 and newer. The rule rolls forward, so the threshold changes over time.
Maine BMV also distinguishes vehicle types. Its current Titles page lists all motor vehicles except special mobile equipment and trailers with an unladen weight of 3,001 pounds or more among the vehicle classes requiring title, subject to the model-year rule.
Three Questions Help Determine Whether the Maine Title Rule Applies
For an RV seller, start with:
- Is the RV self-propelled or is it a trailer?
- What is the model year?
- If it is a trailer, what is its unladen weight?
A self-propelled motorhome and a lighter towable of the same age can therefore have different title requirements.
Do not assume every camper in Maine requires a title. Do not assume every towable is title-exempt.
If a Maine Title Is Required, Transfer It Properly
Maine law says that when an owner transfers an interest in a titled vehicle, the owner executes the assignment and warranty of title at delivery and delivers the certificate and assignment to the transferee or Secretary of State.
Receiving an RV offer does not itself transfer ownership.
A Signed Bill of Sale May Be Part of the Transaction Documentation
For a privately purchased motorhome, Maine BMV’s current registration page lists a signed bill of sale among the documents the buyer needs.
That guidance should not be stretched into a claim that a bill of sale replaces a required title. If the RV falls within Maine’s current title requirements, the title still needs to be handled under the applicable title rules.

What If the Maine Title Is Lost?
Maine provides a duplicate-title process. The BMV title resources provide replacement options for an eligible previously issued Maine title.
Mention a missing title before pickup is scheduled rather than waiting until the sale is ready to close.

No Paper Title Can Mean an Electronic Lien
Maine operates an Electronic Lien Titling program for participating lenders.
Participating lenders receive an electronic title record instead of a paper certificate. After a participating lender releases the lien electronically, Maine BMV prints a paper title and mails it to the vehicle owner. Lender participation is optional.
This means “I lost my paper title” and “the title is electronic because of a lender” describe different situations.

A Recorded Lien Must Be Addressed
Maine’s title-transfer statute says the owner must provide the transferee with a properly released certificate of lien when one was issued to a lienholder, subject to the statutory electronic-title exception.
An accepted offer does not automatically eliminate financing or a recorded security interest.
If the RV still has a lien, disclose it while the vehicle is being evaluated so the ownership situation is understood before the final handoff.
Motorhomes and Towables Have Different Odometer Rules in Maine
Maine’s odometer rules distinguish motor vehicles from vehicles that are not self-propelled.
Section 752 requires odometer information on motor-vehicle transfers when applicable. Section 752-A expressly exempts a vehicle that is not self-propelled and also contains an age-based exemption for certain older motor vehicles.
Practically:
- a motorhome may require odometer disclosure, subject to the applicable exemption
- a travel trailer or fifth wheel is not self-propelled and is exempt from the odometer-disclosure requirement under that provision
Do not give a towable RV motorhome mileage instructions.
What Happens to Maine Registration and Plates After the Sale?
Maine law says the registration expires when the owner transfers or assigns title or an interest in the vehicle.
The same statute says the registrant may request that the plates and registration number be assigned in the registrant’s name to another vehicle. If the registration has expired and the owner has no intention to renew or transfer it within six months, the owner must remove the registration plates and send them, with the registration certificate, to the Secretary of State.
The practical point is that the buyer does not simply inherit the seller’s Maine registration.
What If the RV Was Inherited?
An inherited RV can require additional ownership documentation before it can be sold.
Maine BMV provides separate instructions for:
- a surviving spouse
- a personal representative
- a joint owner
- a surviving common owner
- an heir
The BMV also says that a missing Maine title may require Form MVT-8 and that an active lien needs to be addressed with the lienholder.
Possessing an inherited RV does not by itself establish who has authority to execute the transfer.

Pickup Planning Starts With More Than “It Doesn’t Run”
Transportation planning depends on both the RV and the property where it sits.
Describe:
- whether a motorhome rolls and steers
- whether brakes release
- tires and wheels
- visible axle or suspension damage
- hitch or pin-box condition
- landing gear
- open or stuck slides
- driveway or site surface
- narrow gates
- tight turns
- steep grades
- trees and low branches
- overhead wires
- nearby buildings
- parked vehicles
- soft ground
- storage-facility restrictions
- campground access rules

If the RV is at a storage facility, campground, repair shop or property you do not control, disclose the location and access requirements before pickup is scheduled.
When Selling Has Become a Removal Problem
A severely deteriorated RV with little remaining whole-unit value can become primarily a removal problem rather than a selling problem.
