Before You Pay to Fix It, Get an As-Is Number
A major repair only makes financial sense if the additional selling value is likely to justify what you spend. Before approving roof work, new tires, plumbing repairs, generator service, slide repairs, or drivetrain work on an RV you already plan to sell, compare the estimate with an as-is offer.
The same thinking applies before another storage or winterization cycle. Cleaning out personal belongings is sensible. Turning an older RV into dealership-ready inventory is not required just to learn what it could be worth today.
What Actually Changes the Evaluation
Good information matters more than polished sales language. If you know something is wrong with the RV, say what it is rather than describing the unit as “good for its age.”
- Year, manufacturer, model, RV type, and approximate length
- Mileage for a motorhome and generator hours when known
- Whether it starts, drives, rolls, steers, and brakes
- Roof leaks, soft flooring, plumbing problems, mechanical trouble, or major missing components
- Current title status and any lien connected to the RV
- Recent photographs showing the exterior, interior, tires, hitch or cab, and known damage
- The exact Iowa location and enough information to understand pickup access

Before Pickup, Check the Iowa Paperwork
Ownership paperwork is one part of the sale worth checking before an RV is scheduled for removal. The Iowa DOT seller checklist instructs vehicle sellers to properly assign the title, remove the license plates, and keep evidence that the sale took place.
Do not leave your Iowa plates on the RV for the buyer. Iowa DOT says plates may be placed on another vehicle purchased within 30 days when the appropriate fees are paid. If there is no replacement vehicle, the plates should be turned in to a county treasurer.
Check the front of the title for a lien as well. Iowa DOT’s vehicle title guidance lists a Cancellation of Security Interest when an uncancelled lien appears on an Iowa title and also provides access to the state’s replacement-title application. If the title is missing, damaged, jointly owned, or still connected to a lender, raise the issue before pickup instead of assuming it can be solved at the last minute.
A Tow Truck Needs More Than an Address
An RV can be easy to see and still difficult to remove. A unit parked beside a machine shed, on acreage, at a storage facility, in a campground, or behind a residential driveway may need more planning than one sitting on open pavement.
If the RV has been parked for a long time, tell us what is between it and the road. A few wide photographs of the access route are often more useful than another close-up of the exterior.
- Narrow gates, driveways, or tight turns
- Soft grass, mud, gravel, slopes, or drainage ditches
- Low branches, wires, roofs, or other overhead restrictions
- Flat, damaged, missing, or locked wheels
- Vehicles, farm equipment, fencing, or structures blocking the approach
- Storage-facility or campground rules that affect access
For a non-running motorhome, mention whether you have the keys, whether it can shift into neutral, and whether it still rolls and steers. For a towable RV, tire condition, hitch access, landing gear, and room to approach the coupler or pin box can all affect removal planning.

Three Questions Worth Answering Before You Sell
Can I sell a non-running RV in Iowa?
Yes. Non-running RVs can be evaluated as-is. Tell us whether the unit starts, rolls, steers, has keys, holds air in its tires, or has locked brakes or other problems that could affect removal.
What if I cannot find the Iowa title or it still shows a lien?
Mention it before pickup is scheduled. Iowa has procedures for replacement titles and lien cancellation, but the right documents depend on the ownership situation. Check the Iowa DOT guidance or contact a county treasurer rather than assuming a bill of sale alone will solve every title problem.
Should I repair the RV before requesting an offer?
Not simply to request an offer. Get the as-is number first, especially before paying for major roof, tire, generator, plumbing, slide, or drivetrain work. You can then compare the cost of repairing the RV with what it is worth in its present condition.
