New York does not use one ownership document for every RV.
That makes the first paperwork question more specific than “Do you have the title?”
Motorhomes
For most motor vehicles from model year 1973 or newer, New York uses a Certificate of Title.
For a 1972-or-older motor vehicle, a New York transferable registration can serve as proof of ownership.
That means an older motorhome without a modern title is not automatically missing its proper ownership document.
Towable RVs
For a trailer from model year 1973 or newer with an unladen weight of 1,000 pounds or more, New York generally uses a Certificate of Title.
For a 1972-or-older trailer, or a trailer of any model year weighing 999 pounds or less unladen, a transferable registration can be used instead.
Before describing a travel trailer or fifth wheel as having a “lost title,” identify its model year, unladen weight, and the ownership document New York actually issued.

What a New York Seller Has to Complete When Ownership Changes
For a titled vehicle, New York DMV requires the seller named on the proof of ownership to complete the transfer section.
The seller should not fill in the transfer information until the transaction is actually being made. DMV states that cross-outs, alterations, erasures, or corrected information can invalidate the title and require a duplicate before ownership can be transferred.
For a private transfer, New York also requires a bill of sale alongside the appropriate proof of ownership. DMV specifically states that a bill of sale alone is not acceptable proof of ownership without the required title or transferable registration.
That distinction matters if a seller has an old handwritten receipt but cannot locate the ownership document.
Does a Standard New York Title Transfer Need Notarization?
New York DMV’s title-transfer guidance identifies specific out-of-state title certificates whose transfer sections must be notarized. New York is not included in that list.
So do not add a notary requirement to a standard New York title transfer merely because another state requires one.
If the RV is titled in another state, follow the requirements for that ownership document.
Motorhome Sellers Should Check the Disclosure Sections
For motor vehicles manufactured in or after model year 2011 that are still within the applicable 20-model-year period, New York requires the seller to complete the odometer disclosure on the title.
New York DMV does not require that odometer disclosure for 2010-or-older motor vehicles or 2011-or-newer motor vehicles once they are older than the 20-model-year disclosure period.
The Damage Disclosure Statement on a New York title must also be completed for motor vehicles.
These are motor-vehicle requirements. Do not automatically apply the motorhome odometer rule to an ordinary travel trailer or fifth wheel.
What If the New York Title Is Lost?
If New York issued a title and it has been lost, stolen, or damaged, DMV provides a duplicate-title process.
Once the duplicate title is processed, the original title and all earlier duplicates are no longer valid for transfer.
That means finding an older title after a duplicate has been issued does not make the older document usable again.

What If a Lien Is Still Printed on the Title?
A lien printed on the title does not necessarily mean the loan is still outstanding.
New York DMV says that when the lien has been satisfied, the owner does not have to obtain a new lien-free title before selling the vehicle. The original title can be transferred together with the original proof that the lien was satisfied. Photocopies of the lien release are not accepted for that purpose.
If the lien is still active, or you are not sure whether it was released properly, raise that issue before pickup is scheduled.

Remove Motorhome Plates Before Completing the Sale
New York DMV tells a motor-vehicle seller to remove the license plates and windshield registration sticker before completing the sale.
If the plates are not being transferred to another vehicle, DMV instructs the seller to turn them in.
The physical pickup of the motorhome and the seller’s registration responsibilities are therefore separate steps.
Keep New York Liability Insurance in Force While the Registration Remains Active
For a New York-registered motor vehicle, liability coverage must remain in force as long as the registration remains valid.
If coverage is going to end and no replacement coverage will begin, DMV instructs the registrant to surrender the plates before the insurance ends.

Possession of an RV does not automatically establish authority to transfer it.
