Sell Your RV in Lafayette, IN – Before You Move the Trailer

If the truck that once pulled your travel trailer or fifth wheel is gone, moving the RV should not automatically be the first step toward selling it. The same is true for a motorhome that no longer starts. Before paying for repairs, another tow, or a temporary place to park it, find out what the RV may be worth where it already sits.

Samy RV buys common motorhomes and towable RVs in running and non-running condition. Its current RV buying guidelines say repairs and cleaning are not required before an offer, and free towing is included with an accepted purchase.

No obligation. Free towing included.

Before You Move a Trailer to the Street

If the tow vehicle is no longer available, leave the trailer where it is until the pickup plan is clear. Lafayette’s current Municipal Code says a camper or trailer may not be parked on a city street unless it is coupled to a vehicle capable of legally towing it.

That makes the order important. Do not move an uncoupled travel trailer or fifth wheel to the curb days before a sale simply because it appears easier for a buyer to reach. A trailer already sitting on a driveway or other lawful parking area may be better evaluated where it is.

Evaluate first. Plan pickup second. Reposition only when the actual removal plan requires it.

Can the RV Leave From Where It Sits?

“It doesn’t run” is not useful language for a travel trailer. The better questions are whether it can still be hitched, whether its running gear is intact, and whether a tow vehicle can physically reach it.

  • Travel trailer: show the coupler, tongue jack, tires, wheels, axles and brakes, and identify anything that prevents normal towing.
  • Fifth wheel: photograph the pin box, landing gear, tires, wheels and slide position, plus the clear space in front of the trailer.
  • Property access: show the driveway or access lane, gate opening, surface, slope, soft ground, fences, trees, buildings, overhead wires and enough room for towing equipment to approach and turn.

Photograph the way out, not just the RV. A close-up can show roof or body damage. It cannot show whether a pickup can back under a fifth-wheel pin box without meeting a fence, tree, building or parked vehicle.

A non-running motorhome is a different problem. Starting and moving are separate questions, so report whether the coach has keys, rolls, steers, releases its brakes and can shift into neutral where applicable. Lafayette’s code also separately addresses abandoned, unlicensed and genuinely inoperable motor vehicles on private property. If the coach has reached that condition, or a city notice has already been issued, deal with the current situation before removal becomes urgent.

No Paper Title? Check the Indiana Title Format First

Not finding a paper certificate does not necessarily mean the RV’s title has been lost. Indiana BMV says that since July 1, 2025, customers may choose to have vehicle titles issued electronically or on paper. Before ordering a duplicate, confirm how the RV is actually titled using the state’s electronic-title guidance.

If financing remains, resolve that separately. Indiana’s current lien guidance says all lienholders must release their interest before a vehicle is sold, and an electronic lien must be released electronically.

When requesting an offer, provide the names shown as owners, whether the title is paper or electronic if known, and whether a lien remains. Find the paperwork problem before pickup becomes the deadline.

Repair It Only If It Changes the Numbers

One contained repair on an otherwise desirable RV may be worth making. Tires, brakes, bearings, landing gear, roof work and a separate tow all arriving together are a different calculation.

Before spending mainly to improve the sale, compare three numbers: what the RV may be worth as-is today, what the complete repair and transportation work will cost, and what you could realistically sell it for afterward.

Repairs make sense when they change the economics. If the difference is small, compare the as-is option first. The guide on when an RV may no longer be worth repairing covers that decision in more depth.

Find Out What the RV Is Worth Before You Reposition It

If the tow vehicle is gone, the motorhome no longer runs, or pickup will require some planning, start with accurate information rather than another expense. Send the year, make, model, condition, ownership status, Lafayette location, current photos, mobility details and clear pictures of the route out.
